EUI Alumnus, Professor Francisco Bethencourt, has published a new book Racisms: From the Crusades to the Twentieth Century.

In the second podcast of our ‘Return to your Alma Mater’ series, Bethencourt sits down with Jorge Flores, Vasco da Gama Professor of History of European Colonial and Post-Colonial Systems at the EUI. Racisms: From the Crusades to the Twentieth Century is the first comprehensive history of the subject, which the author says is “challenging the idea of innate racism shared by human kind.” In this podcast, he discusses with Flores  the ways in which racism served political projects the need for a combination of British and French approaches to historical discourse.

Francisco Bethencourt is now Charles Boxer Chair at King’s College London and is considered an expert on the Portuguese-speaking world.  He has also lectured at Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Universidade de São Paulo and Brown University.
